The scene portrayed is a traditional Kiowa burial scene. It is speculated that the three white buffalo are depicting spiritual buffalo, not real live buffalo. The burial is taking place in winter as evidenced by the dreary sky color and the abundance of snow.
Hill, or Whitebuffalo, had a varied career as a technical illustrator, commercial artist, promotional director for manufacturing companies, scenic artist and set designer, free-lance artist, and painter.
It is speculated that he probably did not produce many paintings during his busy career. The painting is signed in lower left and dated 1970.
Condition: the painting appears to be in original condition although it has not been examined out of the frame
Provenance: from the collection of Katherine H. Rust
