Trading posts opened up on the Navajo Reservation shortly after the Navajo’s return from their internment at Bosque Redondo in the late 1860s. Records show that traders began to take in pawn by the late 19th century, and it has remained a common practice on the reservation up to today. A person’s wealth was in their jewelry. The bigger the piece, the better.

This large bolo / bola tie would have been the style someone would have pawned to get money for a special occasion.  The large turquoise stone commands one’s attention. It is enclosed by a frame of raindrop silver balls and the top and bottom are adorned with reversed stamped oval motifs. The silver has a lovely patina that is a testament to its age. There is evidence this bolo was worn a great deal, as the stone has a small hairline fracture. This in no way takes away from the appearance, in fact it adds to the appeal of the piece. It is something that was worn, valued and cherished for a long time.

Condition: one horizontal fracture in the stone but the silver bezel is holding the stone securely.
