close up viewRudolph Treas was a member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe of New Mexico.  He attended the Santa Fe Indian School for several years then attended the University of Arizona where he continued studying art. Dorothy Dunn characterized him as “an authoritative painter who imparts convincing realism and action to his subjects.”  He painted generally in flat tones in non-brilliant colors.

This painting of an Apache woman gazing off into the distance is featured in tones of browns and greys as his her horse.  All the colors chosen by him are soft and flat and pleasant to view.  The lack of bright colors is a trait of his.
