This chest with three large drawers and two file drawers was used by Mr. J. C. Penney at the 34th Street office in New York City until the move to a 53rd Street address. It is believed that Mr. Penney had the chest in his first office in Salt Lake City in the early 1900s.
The construction is of the style seen in barrister book cases where each section is removable and stackable. The base is one section, the pair of file drawers is another, and the three wide drawers are each separate sections, and finally, the top layer is a single section.
The following affidavit of a former employee of Mr. Penney's serves to document the provenance:
Condition: The condition of the cabinet is very good with only some minor dings here and there but nothing of significance. One drawer pull is slightly bent.
Provenance: From the office of Mr. J. C. Penney
