Rarely do the conservative New Mexico potters paint katsinas on pottery. Hopi potters have done so for decades, but one does not see such from the Rio Grande pueblos. Gregorita Trujillo is apparently an exception.
This jar features two Mudhead Katsinas on opposing sides, each holding a gourd rattle and evergreen boughs. The painted designs were executed in matte slips, as was the tan background. The rim and underbody were slipped in red and stone polished.
This jar most likely dates to circa 1980 or earlier. The artist's name is etched into the underside as G. Trujillo.
