“Blue Eyed Indian” is a take on the Navajo Freight Line that existed in the mid-20 century and which was purchased in the 1970s by ABF Freight which is still in existence. The Navajo Freight Line featured the image of the face of a Navajo wearing a head band and a feather. The word NAVAJO was promptly painted on the trucks. Such a name and image might not be considered politically correct today but was good advertising for the Southwest as it travelled throughout the country hauling freight. The artist, while in college, joined the government program Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) by which he was assigned to the Navajo Reservation. As a result of this experience, his art is a reflection of his tenure with working to improve the lives of Reservation Navajos. He moved permanently to New Mexico as a result of this experience. Much of his art reflects his knowledge and appreciation of Navajo life. The image is titled “Blue Eyed Indian” in lower left, numbered 22 of 25 in lower center and signed by the artist and dated 1978 in lower right. The frame is a standard silver metal frame. Condition: appears to be in original condition. Provenance: from the collection of Katherine H. Rust
