Sam Smith Fine Art European American Paintings Paintings European American Artist signatureSmith moved to Albuquerque at the age of 7 years, and was associated with the University of New Mexico art department from 1956 until his retirement as a professor of art in 1984. He had studied with artists Randall Davey, Jack Levine, Ben Turner and Carl Von Hassler. During World War II, he documented combat scenes while on duty in West Africa and in the China-Burma-India Theater.

Smith was one of the most accomplished Albuquerque artists during the mid-20th century. He was a friend of Wilson Hurley, who had praised his artistic accomplishments.

In this painting, Smith has captured the period of change in the fall when the aspen leaves change from green to gold. The painting is highly textured and filled with color. It perfectly accents the feel of the fall season in the richness of colors chosen by the artist. His application of the rich colors demonstrates his knowledge of techniques of oil painting.

Condition: the painting is in original excellent condition. It is signed Sam Smith lower right and is undated.

Provenance: from an Albuquerque gentleman
