David Baca (1961-) signature

This oil pastel by David Baca is from the early part of his career where his work focused on the ancient architecture of New Mexico and its connection to the surrounding landscape. An unnamed Pueblo village is bathed in a crimson glow. Part of the village is shaded in darkness, while the upper layers are swathed in light, giving the impression of a new day dawning or perhaps the peaceful close of an evening. The sky is rendered in the deep blue that is distinctly New Mexican. In the foreground, a blue green ribbon suggests the presence of a river or stream. Small ladders reaching towards the sky establish the fact that the location is uniquely Puebloan. The painting is signed in the lower right corner with the artist’s signature and 1984.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1961, David Baca decided at an early age that he wanted to be an artist. His first paintings were of homes set in mountain landscapes. He moved to New York in 1988 where his body of work focused on abstract interpretations of city architecture. Today, he lives and works in Santa Fe where he is known for colorful abstract cityscapes and his work as an art director for the film industry.

Condition: The Original Painting of a Pueblo Scene is in very good condition.

Provenance: The painting is from the estate of a former New York resident.
