Shipibo pottery from the Peruvian Amazon is hand coiled like pueblo pottery and fired in an open outdoor firing as well. The Shipibo Indians live at the southwestern edge of the vast Amazon Basin in Peru. They reside on the banks of the Amazon River and make their livelihood as artisans, fishermen, and hunters.
The Shipibo produce beautiful pottery with designs that mimic the flow of the rivers and the heavenly constellations such as the Southern Cross and patterns from the skin of the Anaconda. Their artistic talents are evident in the design layout and execution of the pottery vessels.
We have interpreted this effigy vessel to have the features of a female. It probably dates to the 1960 decade.
