Shipibo pottery is fashioned by the natives of Northern Peru, South America. The pots are hand coiled and built up similar to pueblo pottery. No potter's wheel is used. They are fired in an outdoor firing. Although there are no written records defining the designs, it has been speculated that the designs are derived from body tattoos adopted by the natives. It has also been speculated that the designs feature intricate geometrics inspired by the visions seen while ingesting a brew used by the natives as a ceremonial sacrament.
Regardless of the origin or meaning of the designs, the pottery is phenomenally beautiful and intriguing.
Condition: some rubbing of nose area but overall the jar is in excellent condition
