Alfred Aguilar Sa Wa Pin | San Ildefonso Pueblo | Southwest Indian Pottery | Figurines | Nacimiento | signature

Alfred Aguilar is the son of Rosalie and Joe (José) Aguilar who were well-known potters from San Ildefonso Pueblo.  Although he has worked in different mediums, he is best known for his works in clay.   His black stone-polished buffalo figurines have long been collected but his nacimientos are not often offered for sale.  Alfred's nacimientos can have as many as sixteen pieces or as few as five and the figures tend not to have faces and the colors are typically creams and greys with polished red or black sashes or blankets.   His sets will sometimes include a buffalo, which appears to be his favorite animal.

This set includes a male figure with a blanket, a female figure with a painted cross on the front, a buffalo, a lamb and the Christ Child with a design painted on the front.  All of these pieces are in cream, grey and polished red slip.  A manger of paper and straw was added at a later date.  Below the female figure it is signed Alfred Aguilar San Ildefonso Pueblo.

Condition:  good condition with both broken arms glued on one figure.

Provenance:  from a Santa Fe collector.
