Guadalupito Sanchez (ca. 1920s – 2011)

Desideria Montoya (1889-1982), a sister to Maria Martinez, was married to Donecio Sanchez and they had 6 children, one of whom was Guadalupito Sanchez. He is listed in Snodgrass (1968) but with no information other than he was exhibited in the Fred Wilson Gallery and Trading Post in Phoenix, AZ, a business that no longer exists. Russell Sanchez, well-known potter of San Ildefonso, told me that he was a son of Desideria and that he passed away in 2011. Based on the technical proficiency in this one painting, he obviously was well trained and may or may not have painted for a number of years; however, this is the only painting by him we have seen. It is stamped on verso with THE STUDIO U. S. Indian School, Santa Fe, NM., so he obviously attended the Santa Fe Indian School and this painting was executed while there. The painting is signed on verso as follows: Guadalupito Sanchez, San Ildefonso Pueblo and titled Deer Dancer. The painting has been re-framed using all acid-free materials and Museum Glass and a window on verso allows for the artist’s signature to be viewed. Condition: the painting is in very good condition. Provenance: from a gentleman in California
