Margaret (b.1936) and Luther (1911-1987) were the children of Lela and Van Gutierrez. Working together, the siblings continued the polychrome style of painting begun by their parents. No other potter at Santa Clara used the mixture of natural colors in their pottery. Colors ranging from tan, red, green, blue, gold, black and white used in this wedding vessel were all obtained from natural pigments.
The wedding vessel is decorated with a very colorful Avanyu (Water Serpent) completely wrapped around the body. On each neck spout there are pairs of hunter-like figures back to back. They each have square heads and each carries a spear.
Condition: The wedding vessel is in original condition
Provenance: from the Katherine H. Rust collection
