Unquestionably the outstanding Tesuque Pueblo painter and one of the most outstanding of all the pueblo artists was Patrick Swazo Hinds (1929-1974). Adopted at the age of 9 by a California family, Swazo grew up off the reservation but returned every summer to Tesuque Pueblo. It is this exposure to a different way of life that is probably responsible for his style of art and that, in turn, is responsible for his wide appeal and his great success as an artist.

Swazo Hinds did not paint in the two-dimensional style of The Studio of the Santa Fe Indian School nor did he follow in the abstract style of Fritz Scholder and others of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), rather he had his own style, which was a mixture of realism and modernism.

Swazo Hinds executed a dozen stone lithographs at Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque during his career.  This is one of those.  It is number 50 of 75 in the edition and was executed in 1974 in brown ink on buff Arches Cover paper.  Four lithographs in this set were printed together on a single sheet of paper, then the four were separated by tearing the paper apart, thus leaving the deckled edges.  The printmaker on this project was Ben Q. Adams.  These four lithographs were the last ones executed at Tamarind before Swazo's untimely death at age 50.

The other lithographs that comprise this set of four are shown at the bottom of the page as Related Items.

Condition: This image is in original excellent condition.  It has been framed using all acid-free materials and a strong and bold dark brown frame.  The paper was floated so that the deckled edges are exposed and none of the paper is under matboard.

Provenance: ex. coll. Native American artist to whom this was a gift.
