Jeweler Unknown
  • Category: Belts and Buckles
  • Origin: Zuni Pueblo
  • Medium: turquoise, jet, mother of pearl, spondylus shell
  • Size: 2-1/4 x 1-3/8” buckle face
  • Item # C3210S
  • SOLD

Zuni multicolor inlay is an extremely popular expression of Zuni art. The rainbow of colors used is derived from specially cut pieces of turquoise, spondylus, jet and mother-of-pearl. Each of these has meaning in the Zuni religion. Each stone is cut and meticulously set in mosaic style within silver channels and secured with a silver bezel. Although the artisan did not sign the piece, it is obvious that it was one of the finer lapidary artisans at Zuni. It appears that this is a first half of the 20th century set. I doubt seriously that is was made after 1950. All it needs is a belt. Condition: the set is in excellent condition Provenance: from a gentleman in Florida Recommended Reading: Zuni Jewelry by Theda and Michael Bassman
