Zuni Pueblo Artisans: Masters of Lapidary Art

Renowned globally, the artisans of Zuni Pueblo have carved a niche for themselves as exceptional lapidary artists and jewelry makers. Their mastery lies in their ability to meticulously cut stones and assemble them, creating intricate mosaic imagery in jewelry. A prime example of their exquisite lapidary work is the Knifewing pin.

The Knifewing pin, likely dating back to the 1930s, is a testament to the timeless quality of Zuni jewelry. This estimation is corroborated by the former owners of Kania Ferrin Gallery in Santa Fe, who suggested this timeframe when they sold the piece to its current owner.

The Zuni Knifewing, along with the Zuni Rainbow Man, emerged as popular designs among Zuni jewelers in the 1930s. Revered as a supernatural entity by the Zuni people, the Knifewing's design was likely modified for public use to respect the sensibilities of traditional Zuni individuals. This pin showcases the Zuni craft of multi-stone inlay, with each tiny piece precisely positioned to form a miniature masterpiece.

The composition of the pin is a harmonious blend of diverse elements: a deep black jet, an orange-colored spondylus shell, blue turquoise with a copper matrix, and white shell or bone. These components are arranged in a stone-to-stone pattern on a silver backing, framed by silver edging. Adding a final touch to the Knifewing are earrings crafted from silver wire, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the piece.
