Jim Tartsah (1934-1984)

Fortunately, the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, OK, has several Jim Tartsah paintings in its collection and has published a one-page article in the book "Visions & Voices" and the information is statements by his brother and nephew.  His brother stated that Jim Tartsah did not have any formal training as an artist but was self-taught.  It was a gift he possessed.  His nephew stated that he was a composer of songs as well as an artist of paintings. 

I have been unable to find much additional biographical information on Tartsah.  Snodgrass, in her 1968 book on Indian artists, lists his name and Kiowa tribal affiliation, but no other details.  An on-line search revealed several paintings by him that sold at auction, but no biographical information.
