At the turn of the century, Edward S. Curtis and a group of extraordinary photographers took many pictures of what they believed was a dying culture-that of the North American Indian. However, at least in the Southwest of the United States, Indians have persisted in their traditional ways. The contemporary photographs of M. K. Keegan bear witness to the fact that Southwestern Indian society and culture are still alive and flourishing today. M.K. Keegan has been working with and photographing the Native Americans of the Southwest for the past twenty-five years. Among the photographs in her files, she found many that look startlingly similar to some made fifty to one hundred years before. She has selected color photographs from her collection that echo the ancient traditions portrayed in black-and-white vintage photographs. Juxtaposed on facing pages, these vintage and modern images comment upon the evolution and continuity of Indian culture, telling a moving story of timeless values.
