From the Jacket:

Many are the songs written about the vanishing race, its romance and past, but too little is known to us about the actual life and culture of the American Indian.

Fortunately since the publication of “Ramona” at the end of the last century a number of archaeologists and scholars have delved into the past of the Red Man. Recent researches and studies have brought to light and recorded much interesting information about the aboriginal modes of thought, the social and tribal customs, religious ceremonies, dances and legends of the Indian.

Mr. James, who is one of the best known authorities on Indian lore, presents in this volume a complete study of one of the domestic arts in which some tribes, especially the Navahos [sic], have attained unequalled skill. Against the fascinating background of Indian history the author tells of the practice of blanket weaving, the uses of designs and their symbolic meaning, of the application of colors, the methods of dyeing and also gives valuable hints on how to obtain genuine Indian blankets.

It is practically the only book on the subject and gives to the Indian blanket a status similar to Oriental rugs, which it at times exceeds in artistry and beauty. There are more than one hundred illustrations in the book of which 32 plates are in full colors.
