Pauline Setalla married into the Frog Woman/Feather Woman families. She may or may not still be active as she was born in 1930 which would make her 80 years old this year. She had 10 children, some of whom are potters carrying on her legacy.

This whimsical dish in the form of a rooster is quite charming. I am unaware if Pauline produced items of this character on a regular basis or not. This is the only pottery made by her that we have had in the gallery in over 10 years, so I don’t know her style of work. It is a wonderful piece of folk art as well as a piece of true Hopi pottery.

It is quite possible that there was a strap handle spanning the width of the bowl. I have seen that on other bowls of this nature by other potters. If there was a handle in the past, a conservator did a wonderful job of removing it and finishing off the surface where it once existed.
