Dolores Lewis Garcia is a daughter of Lucy M. Lewis, and was taught the craft of pottery making by her mother. She says her ancient ancestors, the Anasazi, inspire her designs. The design on this jar is one generally associated with Zuni Pueblo. The figures are known as “heart line deer.” It has been stated that Lucy Lewis approached Zuni elders and asked permission to use the Zuni design on her pottery and her request was granted.
Dolores is from Acoma Pueblo and has received many awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and has been represented in many exhibitions, including in the 1993 Taipei International Exhibition of Traditional Arts & Crafts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan. She has been published in many books.
This jar was constructed in the traditional hand coil method and decorated with vegetal and mineral paints. It is signed Dolores Lewis Acoma New Mexico 2000 on the underside.
