Goldie Hayah is a daughter of Sarah Garcia and granddaughter of Jessie Garcia, both extraordinary potters from Acoma Pueblo.
It's obvious that Goldie Hayah inherited both of the matriarch's talent for making and decorating pottery with wonderful designs. Normally she makes very large pots, but in this instance, she decided for a very small one. It is as exquisitely formed and painted as her larger ones, however, this bowl appears to be greenware. It is in excellent condition.
Greenware pottery is pottery made by a commercial process in molds. Some of the pueblo potters purchase greenware and then apply a slip and their own designs to the vessel and then fire it, most often in a commercial kiln.
The vessel is beautifully designed on the exterior. For all practical purposes, it appears to be like any other pottery vessel except for the clay. Greenware is chalky-white in appearance and Acoma clay is more earthy colored (not as white). The clay in this bowl is chalky-white. There is absolutely nothing wrong with greenware, but it is faster to produce and then paint a design to complete the pottery to sell; and it is oftentimes, much more affordable for the collector.
