Rod Phillips was known for Katsina Doll carvings more so than for paintings, although he did do both. He was the son of Loren Phillips, a jeweler. He attended the Hopi Day School, Phoenix Day School, and Haskell Indian School in Kansas. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 57 years.
In this painting, Phillips features a Koshare Clown kneeling and eating watermelon and spitting out seeds. Surrounding this image, he has drawn, in black, faces of various Katsinas. He has inscribed “Clowns World” below the clown. The painting is signed in lower right. It is framed in a new black wood frame, without the use of mats. Spacers between the painting and glass separate the painting from touching the glass.
