Jim Tartsah Fine Art Native American Paintings Painting Kiowa Plains Indian sigantureFortunately, the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, OK, has several Jim Tartsah paintings in its collection and has published a one-page article in the book "Visions & Voices" and the information is statements by his brother and nephew.  His brother stated that Jim Tartsah did not have any formal training as an artist but was self-taught.  It was a gift he possessed.  His nephew stated that he was a composer of songs as well as an artist of paintings.

I have been unable to find much additional biographical information on Tartsah.  Snodgrass, in her 1968 book on Indian artists, lists his name and tribal affiliation, but no other details.  An on-line search revealed several paintings by him that sold at auction, but no biographical information.

This painting of two horses is an indication that Tartsah was a fine artist.  It has a somewhat primitive or folk art feel in its application.

Condition:  appears to be in very good condition but has not been examined out of the frame.  It has been framed using acid-free materials.

Provenance: from a California collector of Native art

Reference:  Visions and Voices: Native American Painting from the Philbrook Museum of Art edited by Lydia L. Wyckoff
