Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Maria and Julian frequently made what they considered functional pottery items on request from collectors.  Candlesticks, sugar and creamer set, pitchers, lidded boxes, lamp bases and other items were among those items made.

This pair of sugar and creamer was probably made on request.  Each is signed Marie, so they would have been made in the 1923 and 1925 period, a time when Julian painted designs but his name was not included on the pottery.  They may have been made as a pair or each could have been made separately and a collector put them together.  The Avanyu on each is different.  The Avanyu on the creamer has a plume of feathers and the one on the sugar bowl does not have one.

Condition:  each is in very good condition with some scratches

Provenance: from the collection of a family from Pennsylvania
