Contemporary Hopi Katsina Dolls: Tradition, Evolution, and Enduring Artistry
January 17, 2025 until September 01, 2025Adobe Gallery’s Contemporary Hopi Katsina Dolls Exhibit celebrates the vibrant artistry and deep cultural significance of katsina (or kachina) dolls. These intricately carved figures represent the Katsinam, spiritual beings in Hopi culture that embody elements of nature, ancestral spirits, and moral teachings. Traditionally given as ceremonial gifts to young girls, katsina dolls are carved from cottonwood roots and serve as blessings for health, growth, and fertility. Each doll is carefully painted and adorned to depict the unique features of a specific Katsina spirit.

San Ildefonso Pueblo National Treasures, 1850s–1970s
July 02, 2025 until August 17, 2025In the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, San Ildefonso Pueblo remained largely isolated from the American mainstream through much of the 19th century. In this setting, pottery served a primarily utilitarian and ceremonial role—deeply embedded in the daily lives and spiritual traditions of the Tewa-speaking people. But by the end of the 1800s, this small village began a transformation—one that would eventually place it at the very heart of a Native American artistic renaissance.
