Progressions of San Ildefonso Polychrome
April 03, 2024 until July 31, 2024
San Ildefonso Pueblo was a small village in the late 1800s and was out of the tourist route so there was little incentive for potters to make more pottery than necessary for their own use. James Stevenson was there on a pottery collection mission in 1880 and left with about 100 pieces. Perhaps that spurred potters to make replacement pottery for their use and to store up for future collectors. Although many types or styles of pottery were being made there in the late 1800s, the most predominant style was Powhoge Polychrome typology.

The Buffalo Dancer – A Special Exhibit in Watercolors
February 12, 2024 until March 12, 2024
Since meeting San Ildefonso Pueblo artist José Encarnacion Peña (1902-1979) Soqween - So Kwa A Weh (Frost on the Mountain) Enky in 1978, just months after opening Adobe Gallery in Albuquerque, I always welcomed his visits. Unfortunately, Enky died a year later but I have continued featuring his paintings at the gallery. In this Special Exhibit are featuring four of his paintings we have available. One of them is the largest of his I have ever seen. I love his paintings because of their somewhat primitive and innocent look. I think he was recording dances at the pueblo as he saw them or remembered them rather than painting for the sake of selling them. I never felt he was selling his paintings as much as he was sharing them.

Nativity - Nacimiento
November 03, 2023 until January 15, 2024
"Nacimiento" is the Spanish word for nativity scene or crèche. This art form has been popular in Europe since the fifteenth century. The first known Native American-made nativities appeared in the late 1950s. In 1961, the International Museum of Folk Art exhibited the extensive nativity scene collection of Alexander Girard, which included two Native sets. The exhibit increased interest in the art form, encouraging Native artists to create their own works. By the 1970s, artists from a variety of tribes were creating and selling Nacimientos. Today, the sets are widely appreciated and enthusiastically collected.

Historic Cochiti Pueblo Painted Drums
July 12, 2023 until September 01, 2023
Drums, both painted and unpainted of all sizes are used in Pueblo ceremonies. Drums suggest the thunder preceding a rain storm. Each pueblo drum has two heads. Ceremonial songs are arranged to increase in intensity slowly and then build up to a climax. At a point in the song, the drummers know to flip the drum to achieve a higher tone. This increase in intensity and tone inspires the dancers and gives them the kick to continue dancing

Pueblo Historic OLLAS, Dough Bowls, and Storage Jars

Historic pueblo pottery is basically defined as that which was produced at the still-occupied New Mexico and Arizona Pueblos, from the time spanning 1700 to 1940. Very little early historic pottery (1700 to 1880) is available on the market today, as most has found its way into museums or private collections.

Fritz Scholder
February 01, 2022 until March 31, 2022
This show features lithograph, monotype, and cyanotype works from the influential artist, Fritz Scholder. These incredible images mirror the career and lifetime of the artist in their irony, duality, and inspiration. From the beginning of this career, Scholder struggled to represent his reality and that of his subject matter. Scholder did not consider himself an Indian and yet he was widely regarded as a leader of the New American Indian Art Movement. In a 2001 interview Scholder described himself as a "natural optimist, which might be surprising, because I like the dark side of things."

Hopi Pueblo Basketry from Second and Third Mesas
June 15, 2021 until September 14, 2021
Hopi baskets are rich in beauty and cultural significance. Like the pottery produced at First Mesa, the wicker baskets made at Third Mesa and the coiled ones made at Second Mesa celebrate their makers’ connection with the land. Even today, these baskets are made using little more than plant materials and sunlight. The creation of one basket requires countless hours of work and a great deal of knowledge. Their significance to the Hopi people cannot be understated. They are used as gifts, prizes, currency and—most significantly—a wide variety of ceremonial purposes.

Historic Painted Cochiti Pueblo Drums
August 08, 2011 until September 30, 2011
This 37-drum collection includes 28 Cochiti Pueblo painted drums amassed by Dana Lipsiz Scarpitta of New York City over a period of several years. Most of them are at least 50 years old and some might be older.
Drums, both painted and unpainted of all sizes are used in Pueblo ceremonies. Drums suggest the thunder than comes with rain. Each pueblo drum has two heads. Ceremonial songs are arranged to increase in intensity slowly and then build up to a climax. At a point in the song, the drummers know to flip the drum to achieve a higher tone. This increase in intensity and tone inspires the dancers and gives then the kick to continue dancing.

Damacia Cordero was among the earliest of the potters at Cochiti Pueblo to make Storyteller and Singing Mother figurines. She had been making human and animal figures for over fifty years when she turned to storytellers in the 1970s and 1980s. Her animal figures are as recognizable as her storytellers. She made native New Mexico animals but seemed to enjoy making non-New Mexico animalitos such as kangaroos, rhinos, leopards, etc. We are excited to have acquired this collection of eight pieces of pottery made by Damacia Cordero in the 1970s. There are two storytellers and six animals.

13 Artistic Ollas
May 12, 2006 until June 02, 2006
A BAKER’S DOZEN—13 ARTISTIC OLLAS, 1900-1940. The New Mexico Pueblo potter possesses an innate talent in the fine and applied arts. She is a born artist, possessing a capacity for discipline and careful work, and a fine sense of line and rhythm. In this exhibit, we are focusing on the artistic design of early 20th century ollas or water jars from New Mexico Pueblo artisans. Some of these jars were made for use at the pueblos and some were made for sale to tourists and collectors. Regardless of intent, the artistic treatment was the same. We have selected 13 jars we feel are true expressions of potters’ artistic talents. Potters draw their spiritual sustenance from their tribal life, and that life is all a design, whether a ceremonial dance or ramifications of daily life. The designs applied to their pottery are influenced by life at the pueblo. These 13 jars, by thirteen unknown artisans, are testimony to their talents even if their identity remains a mystery.
