This jar is typical of the fine work of Juana Lupita Toribio Pino, formerly a potter from Zia Pueblo. She was an award-winning potter recognized early for her skill at making pottery. This jar is tall and slim, with a generous surface for applying her design of birds, flowers, and clouds. She divided the surface into four sections, two of which feature a bird and two featuring flowers. The lower portion of the jar is highly polished red slip, and the rim is brown, both traditional traits of Zia pottery.
Juana has been identified as Juana, Juanita, and Juanito over the years. The potter signed this jar Juanita Peno. According to Harlow and Lanmon, Juana Lupita Toribio Pino (ca.1890-1987) Ts'iyasgits'a was recognized as an outstanding potter as early as 1922 at the first Southwest Indian Fair in Santa Fe. She continued winning prizes at subsequent events in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Gallup. She was the mother of Sofia Medina.
The cream slip of this jar features a warm polished surface and patina that would suggest an age of 50 to 60 years. The orange/red designs are highly polished and the brown pigment remains in matte finish.
There are some minor abrasions to the surface pigments.
Condition: very good condition with some minor abrasions to the surface pigments.
Provenance: this Zia Pueblo Polychrome Olla by Juana Lupita Toribio Pino is from the collection of a gentleman from New Mexico
