Historic Hopi-Tewa Black-on-red pottery is significantly more rare than the orange-yellow Hopi wares. One of the potters who favored this style was Annie Healing Nampeyo, oldest daughter of Nampeyo of Hano. Annie quite often made Black-on-red but frequently added a white slip in the decoration. This bowl does not contain any white decoration.
The design on the interior of this bowl is quite unusual. Pendant from a framing line near the rim is a series of rain clouds encircling the entire bowl except for an area where there is a ceremonial line break in the cloud chain. In the bottom of the bowl is a huge flower of unidentified species. Surrounding this element are stars, crescent moon, and propeller-like elements that probably represent the wind.
Provenance: This Hopi Black-on-red Bowl with Celestial Design was shown in the exhibit BOWLS: A Pueblo Necessity December 15, 2006 until December 31, 2006 presented at adobe gallery Santa fe.
