Clinton Polacca Nampeyo (1958- )

Clinton Polacca Nampeyo is the grandson of Fannie Polacca Nampeyo, and the son of her son, Harold Polacca and his wife Alice, who was from the Akimel O'odham (Pima) tribe of Arizona.  Clinton started potting around 1975 and had been taught by his grandmother, Fannie Nampeyo.  I am not familiar with his pottery as this is the only one of his we have ever had in the gallery.  If this jar is any indication of his workmanship, then I must say he is a very accomplished potter.

The design on this jar is the traditional Sikyatki-revival style of the prehistoric Hopi migration pattern reintroduced by his great-great-grandmother, Nampeyo of Hano.  The key to a great migration pattern is the manner in which the parallel lines are executed.  Clinton applied the design on this jar with a very steady hand.  The parallel lines are consistent throughout and the polychrome elements of the design are equally executed.  Overall, the jar is a magnificent specimen—large, well-constructed and beautifully designed.

Condition:  very good condition with only a very few scratches which are lost in the intricate design.

Provenance:  from the Jeffrey Trent collection

Recommended Reading:  Canvas of Clay by Wade and Cooke
