There are two granddaughters of Marie Z. Chino whose first names start with the letter C and they are Carol Chino and Clarissa Chino. Carol was born in 1971 and Clarissa also in the 1970s. This outstanding jar with fine-line designs could have been made by either because it is simply signed C. Chino. Perhaps one of them will spot it on our site and let us know which one is the artist of the jar. There is the slight possibility that it was made by Carrie Chino, a daughter of Marie Z. Chino, who was born in 1925, but I doubt it is old enough to have been made by her.
The jar is constructed from native Acoma clay and painted with native slip. It neither is green ware nor was it fired in a commercial kiln. Everything about it is traditional. The design was certainly applied by an experienced potter. The jar is in excellent condition.
UPDATE: Noted pottery expert Richard Spivey stated that this certainly could be by Carrie Chino. He believes it could be old enough and fine enough to be by her. In checking reference, we found that Carrie Chino was awarded a ribbon at the 1993 Santa Fe Indian Market so she was obviously still productive at that time. We are now attributing it to Carrie based on these recent discoveries.
