Felipita Aguilar Garcia, Santo Domingo Pueblo Potter

This jar is different from the others in this exhibit in that the upper area is the more traditional black on cream that the Aguilar sisters made earlier in their careers and the lower area is the negative design they became famous for at the end of their career.

The provenance on this piece is interesting. It came from the estate of W. W. Coon of Tidioute, PA. Coon was married to Nellie Turner in 1902. He was Superintendent of Indian Schools in Washington, DC, until 1919. After that, he was in charge of the California Indian Schools. The pot was sent from Arizona to his wife Nellie in Tidioute in 1918 or 1919.

The jar is in excellent condition with only a small spot of the black paint missing at mid-body.
