The artisan decorated this marvelous small bowl with simple but exquisite designs on the exterior. The interior was left without decoration. A single framing line with a ceremonial break divides the decorated area from the red slipped underside. A black rim completes the decoration. I would estimate the date of the piece to be no later than 1910-1920.

There are five panels of design, each one of which is heavily decorated with black vegetal paint, leaving little of the slipped vessel visible. This creates a negative design, which is bold and strong.

On the underside, written in ink, is the following statement: “Found in the Cochiti area by Gov. P. Arquero. Gift to Grammers 4-8.”

She is often quoted in publications.
