This is probably one of the most dramatic paintings ever produced by Andy Tsihnahjinnie. He was probably one of the most versatile of all Navajo artist of his time and this departure from his regular style is testimony to his abilities.

Tsihnahjinnie was stationed in Japan during World War II and that three and a half years of exposure to Japanese and Chinese paintings certainly had its effect on his art, which is quite evident in this painting. He eventually returned to the traditional two-dimensional style of painting, but this image clearly illustrates his talent for finer detail.

He was particularly fond of horses and frequently painted them in very fine style. The warrior sitting on this horse is very finely clothed and every detail of the clothing is beautifully rendered by the artist. The horse is spectacularly portrayed and the chamisa at the base of the painting is among the most modernist style he ever produced-quite possibly an Asian influence.

Condition: The painting appears to be in excellent condition with only a couple minor scratches on the green background. It has not been examined out of the frame.

Provenance: ex. coll. California collection or Native art.
