Conchas (named after the Spanish word for shell) are round or oval disks of silver. The Diné (Navajo) have taken a design which they may have borrowed from the Mexican concha bridle ornament or from the oval shaped hair ornaments worn by the Plains Indians and added designs copied from the leather stamps of the Spanish and Moors.

This single concha buckle is made of heavy gauge silver and stamped in a scallop design. The workmanship is excellent. It seems to have originally been part of a belt because the leather is still in the center. It will fit a 1-1/2 inch belt.
