Alfonso Roybal, Awa Tsireh, San Ildefonso Pueblo Painter

Awa Tsireh is best known as a painter from San Ildefonso Pueblo, but he was also an accomplished jeweler and metalsmith. He was associated with The Garden of the Gods national park in Colorado and provided them with his jewelry and other pieces. He worked in silver and copper. Most of his pieces were produced with stampwork.

According to Bauver “Jewelry made by Awa Tsireh is uncommon and highly regarded. John Adair listed him as the only silversmith in the pueblo in the late 1930s. He also worked at The Garden of the Gods national park in Colorado, where he produced jewelry and stamped copper trays.”

This copper trivet is typical of the copper trays, bowls and other items he produced at The Garden of the Gods. His name is stamped on verso in the following manner: Hand Made by Indians Awa Tsireh.
