This is a superb bowl from Cochiti Pueblo that dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. It is typically Cochiti in all technical aspects: crystalline-rock temper in the paste, stone-polished, black rim, rag-wiped bentonite slip and black vegetal paints.
The black vegetal design motifs on the exterior of the bowl feature a chain of diamonds surrounding the entire body of the vessel, the lower tips of the diamonds resting on the upper of the two framing lines below the design.
There are three raised arches on the rim that represent mountains. Each one is decorated inside and outside with rain clouds, below which is a pair of framing lines. The fourth wall of the vessel does not feature an arch, but does show ceremonial line breaks at that point. Below each arch is a pair of black leaves attached to the upper of a pair of framing lines. Below these framing lines is a wide red band wiped on in the same manner usually seen on exterior of bowls. The interior bottom of the bowl reveals a highly micaceous slip.
The arches on the rim of this bowl are unusual in that terraced rim bowls generally feature significant stepped terraces on all four walls; however, there are occasions where one of the four walls does not feature such.
Condition: There is wear in the bottom of the interior of the bowl that signifies that the bowl was used for its intended purpose. There was a crack on the exterior of the bowl that did not penetrate to the interior and it has been professionally stabilized. The bowl is now is very good structural condition.
