Once Known Native American Carver

A pre-pubescent boy always portrays Kokosori. Formally his presentation was without clothing, as illustrated in this carving. He is one of the oldest recorded katsinas for the Hopi, as he was seen in 1852 according to documented records. He is best known in Zuni Pueblo, where his name is Shulawitsi. At both Zuni and Hopi, he is often referred to as the Fire God Katsina.

This carving is beautifully executed. His body proportions are excellent and the painted dots well placed. He carries fire sticks in both hands because of his function of Fire God. Strapped over his shoulder and hanging across his back is a rabbit, illustrating that he has been hunting, although he has no bow and arrow in his hands.

Condition: The carving is in excellent condition. There has been no breakage or repair.

Provenance: From the personal collection of a member of the Balcomb family, owner of Balcomb
