In his still life paintings, Henderson made use of strong colors and elements of design, demonstrating lessons learned from his study of Paul Cézanne's work while studying in France before World War I. Henderson and his wife, Alice Corbin Henderson, moved to Santa Fe in 1916. The rituals and dances of the pueblos captivated both of the Hendersons, and he found what he described as true artistic freedom in his newly adopted home state.

Henderson was a practicing architect and an accomplished furniture maker, but painting allowed him the freedom to be loose and to use a lively palette in his work that architecture and furniture making restricted. His use of color was extraordinary and it is this that sets his works apart from other painters of this period.

This painting is not signed, which is customary with Henderson who very rarely ever signed his paintings. A Henderson estate label (#67/0) on verso and Henderson estate number 67 on verso at upper right attest to this having come out of the Henderson estate. Owings-Dewey Fine Art handled the Henderson estate and their label also appears on verso.

The painting is in excellent original condition. It is framed in a 22k gold gilded reproduction Newcomb-Macklin Company style frame by Goldleaf Framemakers of Santa Fe.

Provenance: ex: Owings-Dewey Fine Art, Santa Fe.
