Dan Namingha is the son of Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo and he was raised on the Hopi Reservation. His great grandmother was Rachel Nampeyo. He has been published in over 32 publications, has received commissions for public buildings (Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix), has had more than 35 exhibits plus more than 16 one-man exhibits, and has received numerous awards. All this attests to his extraordinary talent as a painter.

Originally, he was a realistic painter but began to paint in more abstract ways after 1972. He credits Otellie Loloma with encouraging him in this.

This mixed media painting of oil on canvas includes oil paint, hair, fur and fabric. It is a painting of Hopi Katsina masks. Namingha has divided the canvas into four cardinal directions: north, south, east and west—indicating the omnipresence of the Katsina spirits. The colors of the painting symbolize sky, earth and clouds. The painting is not dated but it was completed in 1972.

The painting is in excellent condition. It is framed and ready to hang in your collection.

Appraisal and Authentication: A 2003 appraisal document for $9000 and authentication records for this painting have been provided by Niman Gallery, the Dan Namingha gallery in Santa Fe.
