It is not surprising that this is an exquisitely made bowl. The artisan, Santana Sanchez, is a sister of Marie Z. Chino, mother and grandmother of several Acoma potters, and great-great grandmother of Shana Garcia Rustin, one of our favorite contemporary potters. The family is very talented and very well known.

The walls are thin and consistent in thickness throughout the vessel. All of the materials are native to Acoma Pueblo. The beautiful display of floral designs is most striking and fills the entire body of the vessel, from the rim down to bottom of the bowl.

The bowl has been broken and glued together, but this doesn’t harm the beauty of the vessel. The artisan signed her name on the bottom, in paint, as follows: Made by Santana C. Sanchez, McCarty’s, N. M. It is most unusual to find a bowl from a 19th century potter that displays her name.
