It appears that Laura Chapella Tomosie was potting as early as the 1930s. The Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff has a number of her pieces in its collection, most of which were accessioned between 1959 and 1970. She did not speak English but negotiated with buyers by raising fingers to indicate the price of an object. She was a sister of Grace Chapella.
This bowl is an indication of her talent, both in forming the vessel and decorating it. The bowl is signed on the underside:
Laura Tomosie
65 years old
in 1970
The bowl is beautifully and intricately decorated on the exterior.
