The Northern California women of the Hupa Tribe wear hats of this style as a regular part of their clothing. This one is probably late 19th century. Bear grass and maidenhair fern were used to create the design in half-twist overlay. Half twist overlay is visible only on the exterior.

This hat is in extraordinary condition. There are no missing stitches, and the edge cord is intact. It is an excellent example.

Provenance: The property of Philip Winship Davis, from the collection of his grandfather, George Parker Winship.
