Pottery dance rattles are relatively rare, having been replaced a century ago by gourd rattles. This one is fully intact. There is a small hole at the equator of the globular part that appears to have been part of the original manufacture of the rattle. It was perhaps a vent hole to prevent explosion during firing. There are a couple of other smaller holes of unknown origin. Traditional cream-colored Zuni slip was applied to the entire rattle and a beautiful fire cloud resulted from firing.
