Gilbert Atencio was 14 years old and a student at Santa Fe Indian School at the time he painted this. He graduated from there in 1947. He served in the United States Marine Corps and became a medical and technical illustrator at Los Alamos National Labs. As a result of this full-time employment, he was not a prolific painter.

This piece is evidence of his early-developed talent for painting, a talent he used well in his technical and medial illustration career, and one that he continued to use after retirement from Los Alamos.
