Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

This is a beautiful plain polished black bowl made by Maria Martinez (1884-1980). It is totally polished on the inside and underside. It is absolutely a jewel, with a high luster and without wear. Some of the most beautiful pottery vessels made by Maria are the plain, polished and undecorated bowls and jars. Their beauty is in the shape and burnish, and decoration is unnecessary.

Bowls of this style were generally made by Maria alone, and her sons Popovi Da or Adam would assist in the firing. The bowl is circa 1960. It is in very good condition. It is signed Maria Poveka.

Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.
