Once Known Native American Carver

This katsina doll dates to the 1910 decade. During this decade, the dolls generally conform more to the shape of the cottonwood root from which they were carved than in earlier or later time periods. The upper body extends down to the waist like a cylinder and is exaggerated in its elongation. Below the waist, the wood flares in skirt-like fashion with the two legs projecting from the center of the skirt about knee level.

Arms are rigid and attached to the body throughout their entire length. The hands are undeveloped and held in front of the stomach. The hands are empty of any dance paraphernalia. The legs are short and undeveloped and the feet are slightly enlarged to make the doll stand more easily.

Note that the left foot has been broken and glued. This does not affect the price and is expected to happen to a doll of this age and because the way the wood grain runs.
