This is a large 19th century Isleta Pueblo dough bowl. This style plain-ware was the most beautiful pottery ever produced at the pueblo. With its simple red band applied to the exterior of the rim, and the beautiful display of fire clouds, it needed no other form of decoration. The body of the bowl is simply the unslipped natural clay native to Isleta that has been stone polished to a hardness that makes the vessel useful in daily kitchen needs. The warmth of the clay after it has been fired is akin to a beautiful sunset.

This bowl faced the hazards of daily use and lost some of its rim and sidewall. The missing areas are visible in the (second detail image) photograph. It still is a beautiful example of Isleta 19th century pottery.
