I have been able to find very little information on this piece. I have had two experts acknowledge that it is not pre-Columbian. The origin remains a mystery. I do not know what stone it was carved from either.

Whether collected by Winship in 1890 or years later is unimportant. The piece is exquisitely carved and the mystery of its origin is intriguing.

Provenance: The property of Philip Winship Davis, from the collection of his grandfather, George Parker Winship.
