Tesuque Polychrome evolved from the earlier Powhoge Polychrome about 1830. This beautiful type was popular from that time to around 1910. Tesuque Polychrome vessels developed without influence from non-Indian sources during this time. It was perhaps the conservative nature of these people which kept their wares traditional, while the other pueblos were making more commercial products.

This jar is about as traditional mid- to late-19th Century as one might find. It has the shape of the 1810-1870 storage jars with its rounded body and restrictive neck. The informality of the design shows that this jar is nearer the 1870 date than earlier. The multiple design bands around the constricted neck support this, as do the loose, frilly design elements in the body.

The red paint on the rim extends about 2 inches inside the vessel. A red band below the decorated area is another traditional trait of this pueblo.
